7 Days – Northwest Ontario

The First Nations Vision Trip is a seven-day journey into a remote First Nations community designed for those prayerfully considering long-term missions (3–5 years or more). This “taste and see” trip allows you to experience firsthand the complexity and remoteness of ministry among some of Canada’s Indigenous peoples. You’ll join missionaries serving in the community, meet local believers, and discern whether God may be calling you to serve in this unique and challenging context.

The Bigger Vision

To Every Tribe is committed to walking alongside First Nations communities in Northwest Ontario, Canada with the hope of seeing biblical, indigenous-led churches established. Many of these communities are marked by deep wounds from colonialism, generational trauma, and the lasting impact of residential schools. This remote First Nation, is accessible only by plane or winter road, is situated north of Sioux Lookout, on the picturesque shores of a beautiful lake and is home to more than 600 people.

Our current missionaries, are positioned there to build relationships, communicate God’s Word, and invest in local discipleship. They are still new to the community, having recently moved there to continue work begun by previous TET missionaries. They are continuing some of the previously established ministries while also seeking how God would lead them to use their own gifts and abilities to minister in different ways. They currently work to find ways to build relationships with adults, lead weekly youth ministry, and gather with a small group of believers as a local church. The long-term vision is to see local men, called and equipped by Jesus, shepherding the church, with missionaries walking alongside them in humility, friendship, and gospel partnership.

Firsthand Ministry Exposure

Experience the challenges of living in a remote fly-in community and understand the social, cultural, and spiritual realities of ministry in this context.

Relationship Building

Share tea with locals, listen to their stories, and hear how the gospel intersects with life in this community.

Ministry Participation

Assist missionaries with youth ministry, join the gathering of believers, and contribute to activities that build trust and open doors for spiritual conversations.

Missiological Reflection

Gain insight into how globalization, colonialism, and dependency concerns shape mission work among First Nations peoples.

Prayerful Discernment

Spend time with the missionary family and local believers, considering whether God is leading you to serve long-term in First Nations ministry.

The Need in First Nations in Canada

  1. Many First Nations communities are isolated, accessible only by air or ice road.
  2. The impact of colonialism and residential schools has left deep wounds and spiritual confusion.
  3. Believers often face conflict and many difficulties when following Jesus in their community.
  4. There is a need for missionaries who will clearly communicate the gospel, nurture disciples, and equip local believers to do the work of ministry.
  5. Churches are typically small and fragile, with the need for local believers to grow in discipleship and leadership.

We Are Praying For

We are asking God to raise up missionary units who will:

  • Build trust and relationships in First Nations communities marked by a history of colonialism and mistrust.
  • Walk alongside local believers, nurturing them in discipleship and helping them grow in their God given abilities to do ministry.
  • Help lead youth ministry, providing young people with the opportunity to hear the gospel.
  • Equip and affirm Indigenous leaders who can shepherd their own people and lead the church by standing on God’s Word.

This vision trip is an invitation to enter into the story of God’s work among First Nations peoples. You’ll get to listen  and learn about some of the history of Christian missions among First Nations people and see the need for more gospel laborers. By experiencing the remoteness, hearing the stories, and engaging in ongoing ministry, you’ll gain a clear sense of the realities and opportunities of long-term missions in this community—and whether God may be calling you to join the work.
